The Mass Spectrometry and Dioxin Analysis Laboratory has been operating since 2002 in the National Center for Scientific Research "Demokritos" in Athens, Greece. It is equiped with specialized analytical instrumentation, suitable for the isolation and the determination of dioxins and PCBs in food samples, biological fluids, and environmental samples) and for trace analysis of POPs in general.

The general aims of the Laboratory include the development of analytical methods for existing and new POPs (Persistent Organic Pollutants), the monitoring og levels in food/feed products, environment and population (blood and breast milk), the performance of human exposure assessment, and the examination of public health issues related to POPs.

The Laboratory conducts analysis of dioxins, furans and dioxin-like PCBs according to international protocols (EPA 1613, EPA 1668) after appropriate sample clean-up and determination by high resolution mass spectrometry as specified by the EuC Regulation 252/2012/EC and the Regulation 278/2012/EC.

The Laboratory has been accredited according to ISO/EN 17025 by ESYD (Cert. No. 321) in the following fields :
    - dioxins and PCBs in food, feed, biological samples and air
    - PFOS and PFOA in food and blood

The laboratory is the National Reference Laboratory of the European Commission for the control of dioxins and dioxin-like compounds, it is authorized by the European Commission for the control of pentachlorophenol in food and participates in the United Nations laboratories network for pollution monitoring by toxic organic compounds.
